What you need to know about circuit training

Simply put, circuit training is a concept that involves moving through a variety of exercises in order, performing each for a specific amount of time or reps before moving on to the next. It’s been around for decades and it’s central to our Back in the Game training method – but just why is it so effective?

It’s highly adaptable

One of the key benefits of circuit training is that it can be tailored to suit virtually any training goal and level of fitness – whether you’re trying to burn calories, build strength, enhance your mobility or improve your cardiovascular conditioning.

There are a number of variables that can be tweaked to help achieve these aims, including:

  • Your choice of exercises

  • The time – or number of reps – you assign to each exercise

  • The length of your rest periods

  • The total number of rounds of a circuit you complete in a workout

This scalable structure also makes it easy to progress your workouts over time, either by adjusting any of the variables above or by setting benchmarks to beat, such as the total time it takes you to perform a workout or the number of rounds of a circuit you can perform within a certain amount of time.

It’s very efficient

Circuit sessions don’t need to long. Performing the right exercises in the correct order in a sensibly structured circuit will provide a fantastic workout in a short space of time – which makes them ideal for time-poor individuals. Including full-body, multi-joint exercises such as squats in your circuits will further increase their effectiveness.

It provides balance

Most of us live a sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to postural problems, poor mobility and injury issues. But a carefully designed circuit session can help offset this. By incorporating exercises that require you to push and pull, to bend and straighten, to lunge and squat and to twist and turn, you can work your body through all the key movement patterns required to promote balance.

At Back in the Game, we include circuit training in the majority of our sessions, providing fun, effective workouts that are versatile enough to help you achieve all of your health and fitness goals.
